Regional Overview

Central Transdanubia is one of Hungary’s important agricultural and manufacturing regions. Its economy includes food and chemical production alongside a substantial agricultural resource base.

Within VIVA, the region focuses on accelerating innovation in the agri-food sector through digitalisation, sustainable production and collaboration across industries.

Regional Strengths

Central Transdanubia combines agricultural resources with an established manufacturing base and regional innovation-support capacity.

The Central Transdanubian Regional Innovation Agency has agri-food innovation as one of its core areas of expertise. This enables the region to connect businesses, research, technology and public support around practical production challenges.

The combination of agriculture and manufacturing provides strong potential for testing digital tools, resource-efficient processes and industrial-symbiosis solutions.

Innovation Specialisation

Digital and sustainable agri-food innovation

The region’s specialisation centres on digitalisation and optimisation of production in agriculture and food manufacturing.

Relevant approaches include sensor-based monitoring, precision agriculture, artificial intelligence, traceability and zero-waste production. The specialisation also examines how by-products from one production activity can become useful inputs for another, helping create more circular agri-food systems.

Flagship Pilot

Agri-food industry innovation acceleration

The flagship will support the transition towards more digitalised, traceable and resource-efficient food-production systems.

VIVA’s extended readiness-assessment tools will be used to help innovations progress systematically from research towards market deployment. The activity will address fragmented digital adoption across food-production networks while exploring opportunities in biotechnology, AI and sustainable production.

Sensor-driven optimisation, precision agriculture and strategies for converting by-products into new inputs will form central parts of the regional approach.

Collaboration within VIVA

Central Transdanubia is part of the Eastern European Innovation Nexus with Alba Iulia and Plovdiv.

The region contributes manufacturing and agri-food application environments where digital and bioeconomy solutions can be tested. It can draw on Alba Iulia’s AI and digital-infrastructure expertise and Plovdiv’s circular bioeconomy capabilities, while contributing knowledge of food-production systems and commercial manufacturing needs.

This collaboration is intended to help develop connected regional value chains rather than isolated pilot activities.

Sister-Region Partnership

Central Transdanubia and Österbotten

The partnership with Österbotten combines agri-food digitalisation with renewable energy, sector coupling and industrial symbiosis.

Central Transdanubia provides agricultural and food-production environments in which energy technologies and resource-optimisation approaches can be applied. Österbotten contributes experience in net-zero industrial systems, renewable energy and cooperation across industrial areas.

Together, the regions can examine how clean energy, digitalisation and circular resource use can strengthen the sustainability and competitiveness of agri-food value chains.

Opportunities

VIVA is expected to offer opportunities for:

  • farms and food producers seeking digital and resource-efficiency solutions;
  • SMEs developing sensors, AI, traceability or production technologies;
  • biotechnology and circular-economy innovators;
  • researchers working on precision agriculture and sustainable food systems;
  • companies interested in cross-regional energy and agri-food collaboration;
  • investors and support organisations seeking scalable agri-food innovations.

Future opportunities may include open calls, regional demonstrations, innovation-readiness support, training and partner matching.

Expected Contribution

Central Transdanubia is expected to show how digital and green technologies can be integrated into established agricultural and manufacturing systems.

Its flagship will contribute practical learning on innovation acceleration, traceability, precision production and circular use of agri-food by-products. The region’s cooperation with Österbotten will also help demonstrate how energy and food systems can be connected within a wider Innovation Valley model.
